Domestic Violence Is Everyone’s Problem—Here’s How You Can Help

When it comes to domestic violence, most people assume two roles exist: the abuser and the victim. But that leaves out a third, powerful role—the community.

Neighbors. Friends. Family. Coworkers.
People like you.

At Southern Valley Alliance, we believe that everyone can be part of the response. Whether you’re spotting red flags, offering support, or sharing resources, your actions matter.

Would You Know the Signs?

Domestic abuse isn’t always loud or obvious. Many survivors suffer in silence, unsure if what they’re experiencing is “bad enough” to get help. That’s where you come in.

Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

  • A friend suddenly withdraws from social circles

  • Someone always checks in with their partner before speaking

  • They seem afraid to make their partner upset

  • They downplay concerning behaviors or make excuses

If something feels off, trust your gut.

What Should You Do?

If you suspect abuse:

  • Start with care. “You don’t seem like yourself lately. I just want you to know I’m here if you need anything.”

  • Avoid judgment. Even if they stay, even if they go back—it’s not your job to fix it. It’s your job to support.

  • Share the SVA hotline. “There’s a place that helps people in situations like this. You can call 24/7 and they’ll listen.” [Insert SVA Crisis Hotline Number]

Support = Action

Being part of the response also means taking action:

  • Donate: Your gift supports shelter, legal help, and emergency care

  • Volunteer: Help with events, support lines, or outreach

  • Share: A post, a story, a resource—it could reach the right person at the right time

Together, we can build a community where abuse has nowhere to hide—and survivors have a path forward.
